This month, Greta discusses the importance of reducing days-to-fill

What recruiter has not come to the office the morning after a previous day of meetings or a job fair only to feel they first must dig out from an avalanche of cyber and traditional paperwork? Hiring Managers’ e-mails abound, voicemail is full and tedious tasks such as following up on a reference check or a recently hired employee’s question about orientation await, along with what appears to be a number of “hot, hot” candidates.

I wish I could say I believe the recruiter would have the ability to go directly to the queue of “hot, hot” candidates and start doing her job, but I know that is almost never the situation. The Hiring Manager is a constant source of concern because she is part of the organization; miss a return call and you may turn her into a stream of irritation and complaints. Miss a good candidate’s application and odds are you won’t ever have to deal with him again. Recruiters, to the determent of their professional performance, often spend an inordinate amount of time simply trying to keep the Hiring Manager happy as opposed to maintaining a balanced and professional working relationship. Add that to the never ending list of administrative duties and you have recruiters who are in many ways paralyzed.

Time is money when it comes to healthcare delivery and the ability to staff and retain the best talent is a large part of the financial success of any organization. This will be even more important when Healthcare Reform is rolled out completely.

Last year in 2009 we saw days-to-fill for registered nurses increase slightly from 55 days to 57 days. This surprisingly came as our nation’s healthcare delivery systems enjoyed the lowest vacancy rate in decades. One of the few explanations is that it doesn’t matter how many open requisitions a recruiter has, it is going to take about the same amount of time because the system works like it did 30 years ago with the....

What’s My Buzz?

Your brand is being mentioned, both positively and negatively, whether you like it or not and it's up to you to choose whether to observe this discussion or participate in it. Without a tool to aggregate and categorize this chatter, figuring out who is talking -and when and where they're talking- can be overwhelming and largely impossible. What's My Buzz is designed to help you accomplish just this.

What's My Buzz, introduced by TMP, is a content monitoring platform designed to look for mentions of your company related to recruitment, and to categorize and sort that content.

The What’s My Buzz engine listens to message boards, blogs, tweets and other social conversations, and scans for new content on the press wire, from mainstream news sources, and commercial and content web sites.

Debbie Eberenz
Project Manager

As children, we learn that a compliment, trophy or an award for our accomplishments makes us feel good and motivates us to work harder. Recognition for hard work is a proven motivator from the time we are small children and continues throughout our life. So, it’s no surprise to hear about the importance of recognition in the workplace.

Government Hiring FY2011: Are you ready?

How do you handle as many as 300,000 to 400,000 new hires over a few years? That is the daunting number the federal government is facing, according to Allan Schweyer, a principal for the Center for Human Capital Innovation, which along with TMP Government is one of the members of the Portal for Talent Management in Government (www.TMGov.org). Quoted by Workforce Management Online in August, Schweyer noted that, in spite of serious concern about budget deficits, the Fiscal Year 2011 budget calls for hiring thousands of employees ASAP.

Challenge

MemorialCare Health System is a not-for-profit integrated delivery system which includes five separate facilities. Within the MemorialCare organization, there was an emerging awareness of HR’s impact on the organization’s brand as a whole. MemorialCare’s HR leadership looked at this as an opportunity to implement strategic changes to their recruitment process that would increase efficiency. Their forward-thinking approach combined the budgets of their five facilities, reducing duplication and saving the organization money.

Solution

TMP and HR leadership presented to the MemorialCare Executive Team a system-wide integrated recruitment strategy that utilized best practices, benchmarking data and a case study as basis for system-wide strategy recommendations (with a focus on nursing and hard-to-fill). The five facilities pooled their budgets in order to execute this strategy and shift to become much more digitally-focused.

Tactics

TMP worked with MemorialCare HR to develop a targeted media plan that incorporated Campaign Management tracking. Campaign Management is a comprehensive tool that delivers robust analysis, tracking and reporting of the performance and efficiency of an organization’s strategic media placements.

Industry Update

Retail Industry Has Positive Job Outlook

By: Mike Jellson

According to the Monster.com Summer 2010 Retail Job Conditions Report, the Retail sector is moving in a positive direction following a challenging 2009. For 2010 retail sales have increased, consumer confidence is returning and retail employment is stabilizing. However, uncertainty still swirls around this critical employment sector, now employing 11% of the U.S. working population, as retailers tread cautiously and the economy continues to deliver mixed signs.

The outlook for the Retail sector in 2010 is positive, yet cautious. Annual sales are predicted to rise a minor 2.5% and employment expansion will be restricted until business conditions and consumer confidence are stronger.

The Retail sector's unemployment rate was 9.9% in June, down from its peak of 10.9% in January 2010. Retail sales are up nearly 2% from January 2010 while retail workers have remained steady in 2010 at nearly 14.5 million workers.

Retail online job tracking measures have shown improved performance in 2010. The Retail Monster Employment Indices reported 10-12% year-over-year expansion, despite seasonal slowdowns over the month of July. Online retail job postings rose in the double digits each month from March through June.

A steep 38% of job postings are for temporary positions, indicating employers' caution as they delay hiring for permanent positions.

Retail occupations are concentrated in sales roles.

The top two Retail categories with job postings are Sales/Retail/ Business Development (35%) and Food Services/Hospitality (16%). The leading Retail...
